On 9 May 2023, the final text of Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 31 May 2023 concerning the placing on the Union market and the export from the Union of certain raw materials and products associated with deforestation and forest degradation was published in the Official Journal of the European Union, and repealing Regulation (EU) No 995/2010, which entered into force on 29 June 2023.
The new Regulation lays down rules on the placing on the Union market, placing on the market and exporting from the Union market, certain products. The aim of these rules is to minimise the Union's contribution to deforestation and forest degradation worldwide, as well as the Union's contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and global biodiversity loss.
The regulation affects products listed in Annex I (referred to as relevant products) that contain or have been made using the relevant raw materials, namely cattle, cocoa, coffee, oil palm, rubber, soya or timber, as well as cattle that have been fed with these raw materials, and imposes obligations on operators and traders who deal with them.
This infographic developed by the Sub-Directorate General for Forest Policy and Combating Desertification of the Directorate-General for Biodiversity, Forests and Desertification of MITECO and the Spanish Business and Biodiversity Initiative, with the collaboration of Preferred by Nature, includes a summary of key information on the implications for the actors in the supply chains of the raw materials affected by the new Regulation to combat deforestation and deforestation. environmental degradation (EUDR).
