The development of the Protocol on the State of Ecosystems (EC) is launched in response to the recognized need for companies to have detailed and clear guidance on the measurement and accounting of the state of ecosystems, taking up and promoting the available general guidelines and recommendations. Like the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, but for the state of ecosystems, the EC Protocol will provide key guidance to companies to easily report on TNFD’s C5.0 basic disclosure metric on the state of ecosystems, GRI Disclosure 101-7 “Changes in the state of biodiversity”, or CSRD’s E4-5 disclosure requirement paragraph 41b on “change-related impact metrics” of biodiversity and ecosystems”, for example. How to measure your company’s impact on the state of ecosystems? Which metrics are appropriate and in line with the requirements of major disclosure frameworks and regulations? How do you delineate responsibilities in your value chain and within a landscape? The EC Protocol will ensure that robust approaches are used to measure and account for impacts. It will ensure a level playing field and allow pioneers to confidently disclose their positive impacts on the state of ecosystems. The Protocol will be developed in close collaboration with the main existing initiatives and frameworks, providing the consensus and guidance needed to measure and account for the state of ecosystems, without duplicating existing and ongoing work.
