Natural Lands Map
Detalles
| Natural lands around the world are being converted and degraded at unprecedented levels. Three-quarters of the land has been significantly impacted by pollution, urban sprawl, conversion to agricultural or livestock production, intensive logging in natural forests, and other activities. These changes contribute to climate change, threaten biodiversity, and disproportionately affect vulnerable communities. In fact, the pace of species extinction is also accelerating, with some experts warning that a sixth mass extinction is underway. To mitigate emissions from land cover changes, increase the resilience of supply chains and arable lands, and protect habitats and the communities and wildlife that depend on them, it is more important than ever to limit human conversion of natural lands. Raw materials from the earth are one of the main drivers of this conversion, but now a new tool can help companies that source from these raw materials change the way they operate: World Resources Institute has collaborated with Land & Carbon Lab, World Wildlife Fund and Systemiq to lead the development of an open-source Natural Land Map. This map uses the best available global and local geospatial data that establishes a common baseline that companies can use to visualize the extent of natural lands in 2020 and, by setting targets, assess whether they may be responsible for conversion after 2020. The Natural Land Map can also help companies make decisions around acquisitions and impacts on natural lands of future business activities. This map supports companies that commit to eliminating natural land conversion from their direct operations and supply chains by targets they have set through the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN). The SBTN is a network of more than 80 organizations working on developing methodologies to set science-based targets to protect and restore nature that fit the necessary speed and scale of action determined by science. The SBTN has just released version 3.0 of the Earth Science Based Targets, which you can check out here. |
