A roadmap for upgrading market access to decision-useful nature-related data

Published in the framework of the COP16 on Biodiversity in Cali, Colombia, this discussion paper prepared by the TNFD outlines a roadmap to improve market access to nature-related data that is useful for decision-making.

The roadmap takes a principled approach to identify medium- and long-term strategic improvements across the nature data value chain. It outlines three key priorities that pilots will focus on in 2025, before a final set of recommendations is presented at the end of 2025.

• Development of a composite set of nature's data principles, based on existing scientific, open and corporate assurance data standards.
• Testing of existing nature data sets and sources with upstream data providers against those standards to more accurately determine coverage and quality gaps for priority future investment
• Further specification of market needs and use cases for high-quality, insurable nature-related data through the testing of a beta version of the Nature Data Public Facility (NDPF) and further evaluation of the potential long-term governance, financing, and governance and business model for such a facility.

The public consultation on this roadmap is open until 17 January 2025, with the final version to be published in 2025.
