Private Sector Participates in IUCN World Conservation Congress
The IUCN World Conservation Congress will take place in Marseille from 3 to 11 September. The Congress will have a hybrid face-to-face format and aims to drive action on nature-based recovery, climate change and post-2020 biodiversity.
This Congress is a place where the world comes together to set priorities and drive conservation and sustainable development actions. The event has three main components: the Assembly of Members, where IUCN members vote on priority actions; the Forum, a global marketplace for conservation science and innovation; and the Exhibition, where exhibitors can exhibit their work to Congress participants and the public.
Announced with the slogan Nature, our future, the topics on which the congress will focus are:
-
Managing landscapes for nature and people
-
Conserving freshwater to sustain life
-
Restoring ocean health
-
Accelerating climate change mitigation and adaptation
-
Upholding rights and ensuring effective and equitable governance
-
Leveraging economic and financial systems for sustainability
-
Promoting knowledge, learning, innovation and technology
In relation to IUCN’s work with the private sector, it should be noted that, since its creation in 1948, IUCN has been engaging companies to help conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable.
Specifically, IUCN’s Business and Biodiversity Programme was established in 2003 to influence and support private partners in addressing environmental and social issues. The work of the Program is led by a Business Engagement Strategy, with a special focus on: large “footprint” industries such as mining and oil and gas; biodiversity-dependent industries, including fisheries, agriculture and forestry; and financial services and “green” businesses such as organic farming, renewable energy, and nature-based tourism.
