A renewed IEEB

A renewed IEEB

In 2022, the initiative is updated with the aim of providing greater ambition to respond with technical rigour to new legislation, business demands and international trends, favouring greater leadership among the Spanish business sector, to advance in the conservation of biodiversity and natural capital.

After a strategic analysis in 2021 and a participatory process with the main stakeholders in 2022, the objectives of this renewed IEEB are translated into the constitution of a cooperation forum, information generator and knowledge centre, which is a benchmark in the commitment of Spanish companies to biodiversity, to respond to the biodiversity conservation initiatives of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. and comply with the commitments made in the Convention for Biological Diversity of the United Nations.

This process of change implies, on the one hand, a new governance model marked by the redefinition of the commitments of the IEEB Biodiversity Pact and, on the other hand, the creation of a Community of Practice that accommodates all types of companies regardless of their size and that responds to the challenge of integrating biodiversity into the business model and allows the imperatives of the transition to be transferred Ecological.

The Community of Practice aims to serve as a reference framework in which companies can share knowledge, experiences, projects and positive practices, thus developing specialized knowledge in the field of biodiversity. This community is expected to contribute to advancing the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity, as well as international and national biodiversity conservation plans and strategies by developing tools and encouraging the active participation of its members. Likewise, the Community of Practice must aspire to become a reference forum that facilitates the development of agreements in the field of biodiversity and the publication of outstanding and motivating case studies. All this will be achieved through the programming of different activities, such as workshops, seminars or thematic working groups, among others.

In addition, the new structure of the IEEB involves the reformulation of the Pact for Biodiversity, which establishes principles for companies to incorporate biodiversity and natural capital into their purpose and mission, commitment, governance, management, culture, awareness and alliances and also includes measurable commitments for each company.

Thus, within the IEEB there will be a new membership model that contemplates the possibility of signing the Biodiversity Pact for those companies that acquire clear commitments in terms of biodiversity.

In this sense, two levels have been defined: companies that want to get started in biodiversity management and that establish an action plan to analyse their dependencies and impacts and a more advanced level, for those companies that, knowing their impacts and dependencies, establish a long-term commitment roadmap to preserve biodiversity and natural capital.
