Workshop with companies: how to incorporate data into MITECO’s Integrated Biodiversity Information System

More and more companies have made a commitment to take actions with a positive impact on nature, which requires knowing the changes that any intervention causes in the state of ecosystems, species and natural processes. In this context, data on the state of nature become essential.

The Integrated Biodiversity Information System of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) aims to offer the best available knowledge on the state of nature in our country.

In March 2023, this system was presented within the framework of the Spanish Business and Biodiversity Initiative (IEEB) in order to learn about the knowledge needs of the business sector and explore how companies could provide information. The work continued at CONAMA 2024, where the “Roadmap for a Nature Positive Future: taking advantage of the potential of biodiversity data” was presented.

In this context, the Directorate-General for Biodiversity, Forests and Desertification of MITECO is launching a pilot project to explore how to incorporate the data collected by companies into the Integrated Biodiversity Information System. Entities such as Naturgy, Holcim, Iberdrola, Ferrovial, Redeia and Veolia have already shown interest in participating.

To lay the foundations for this pilot, the IEEB organized a workshop on April 23 in which it was agreed to design protocols to share data in an agile and harmonized way, establish quality controls of the information and avoid duplication.
