| The current biodiversity crisis calls for action to protect species from extinction and ecosystems from serious degradation. As a result, billions of dollars are invested in global conservation every year. Assessing whether conservation initiatives produce positive outcomes for biodiversity is necessary to guide future efforts. In this research, Langhammer et al. have conducted a meta-analysis to determine whether conservation actions, including protected areas and management, provide better outcomes compared to no measures. After the analysis, they concluded that, in more than half of the cases, conservation measures had a net positive effect, but did not necessarily halt the decline in biodiversity. This work demonstrates that multiple types of conservation actions are often beneficial and necessary to halt biodiversity loss. |
