| After 10 years and 1.3 million pieces of data on the companies and financial institutions most at risk of tropical deforestation, conversion of natural ecosystems and associated human rights abuses, Forest 500. A Decade of Deforestation Data lays out 10 lessons to enable and accelerate action to curb deforestation. Continuous delays Almost a quarter (23%) of the companies and financial institutions that have been part of the Forest 500 for 10 years have yet to publish a single deforestation commitment or policy. After a decade in the limelight and numerous attempts at compromise by Forest 500, it is inexcusable that this group has failed to publish a single deforestation pledge. Ignorance has long since ceased to be a defense. The group that has been willfully ignoring the data includes Europe's largest shoe maker, Deichmann Group, China's second-largest food and beverage company, Bright Food, and one of the world's largest investment firms, Vanguard. The leaders Over the past decade, leading companies have proven beyond doubt that market-driven deforestation is a solvable crisis. These companies have made great strides in deforestation, conversion, and associated human rights abuses. This includes developing policies, implementing them and reporting on progress. Nestlé has the highest average score (81%) in the 10 years it has been evaluated. No financial institution has scored higher than 50% in all the years it has been evaluated. The next five years To ensure a livable future, the world cannot withstand another decade of limited progress. This is the critical decade for humanity. To avoid catastrophic consequences, we need to see significant progress in the next five years. With just a few years to go before meeting the goal of halting and reversing deforestation by 2030, COP30 in 2025 will be a pivotal moment. Held in the closest city to the Amazon rainforest, halfway to these global goals, the eyes of the world will be focused on deforestation. Those who have not yet woken up to act on this matter should pay attention at once. |
