Global demand, and the associated price, for high-quality carbon removal credits appears to be increasing, but over the past two years the price of many REDD+ credits has remained well below $10 per tonne. While these low prices may be enough to deter logging in some places, in others it is likely to remain more lucrative to engage in other activities, such as clearing forests for agricultural products. In fact, an analysis by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has suggested that a price of between $30 and $50 per tonne for nature-based credits is needed to incentivise widespread and large-scale action. Of course, any increase in the price per tonne depends on buyers’ confidence in the quality of the credits, as well as the existence of a clear business case, including consideration of their Scope 3 emissions.
