9th Our Ocean Conference. An ocean of potential

Greece will host the 9th Our Ocean Conference in 2024. The Conference is scheduled to be held in Athens at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre on 16 and 17 April. Parallel to the conference, the main conference will be held, which will begin the day before, on April 15.
The Our Ocean Conference was first launched under the initiative of the U.S. Department of State in 2014. Since then, it has gradually become a forum for dialogue that brings together governments, international organizations
academia, the private sector and NGOs that share a common vision for ocean protection and take action to support this vision.
As of the last Our Ocean Conference held in Panama, the conference has managed to gather more than 2160 commitments worth almost USD 130 billion, distributed in the six thematic areas addressed at the conference:

(a) Marine Protected Areas.
(b) (b) Sustainable Blue Economy
(c) (c) The climate-ocean nexus.
(d) Maritime security.
(e) Sustainable fisheries
(f) Marine pollution.

Within these 6 main areas of action, Greece will place particular emphasis on four aspects as horizontal elements covering the six areas of action of the Conference:

(ii) Green shipping encompasses a range of environmentally friendly actions to strengthen emissions control, promote decarbonisation and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
promoting decarbonisation and moving towards more sustainable management of maritime transport with the aim of minimising the global impact on the marine environment.
(iii) The reduction of marine pollution by plastics and microplastics is an imperative task, since this type of pollution of marine or terrestrial origin negatively affects marine ecosystems and can, through the consumption of shellfish, harm human health through the consumption of shellfish, harm human health.
(iv) The green transition in the Mediterranean, a sea that connects three continents and serves as a crossroads where cultures, peoples and civilisations converge, is a key challenge for Mediterranean countries and can bring significant benefits to marine ecosystems.
