Measuring Ecosystem Condition – A Primer for Business

Ecosystem condition describes the overall quality of an ecosystem measured in terms of its biotic (living) and abiotic (physical rather than biological) nature. It is an important concept for

understand the impacts and dependencies of nature businesses.

The condition of the ecosystem needs to be considered in order to meet emerging disclosure requirements and achieve the ambitious goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

These frameworks and standards include the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD),

The Nature-related Financial Disclosure Task Force (TNFD) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).

This handbook aims to leverage the "Recommendations for a Corporate Biodiversity Measurement Standard" from the Align project to guide the measurement of ecosystem condition in different business contexts.

The handbook is designed to complement the guidance developed by specific initiatives and

standards, such as the one produced by the TNFD.
