Forests sustain and protect us in a thousand ways, but they are disappearing rapidly. The world has lost 420 million hectares of forest since 1990. It is an area larger than that of India. Given the environmental crises that lie ahead, including climate change and biodiversity loss, the need to protect these vital ecosystems has become significantly high on political agendas.

This ISSD and SSI report analyzes the measures that five commodity-producing countries in the global south are implementing to reduce and reverse deforestation. It also explores the role of voluntary sustainability standards (NVS) as a complement to such measures.

The paper draws seven common conclusions to help guide governments in the global south as they seek to preserve their forests and comply with an emerging set of related international regulations and frameworks, which can serve as a reference for parts of the world seeking to address deforestation.
